The State Board of Education has constitutional authority to adopt textbooks for grades one through eight (Article IX, section 7.5 of the California Constitution), Instructional materials are broadly defined to include textbooks, technology-based materials, other educational materials, and tests. With the curriculum frameworks and the content standards on which they are based, adoptions in the core subject areas are a powerful leverage point for educational reform and improvement in student achievement.
The adoption process is designed to ensure that the public has the opportunity to review and comment on instructional materials considered for adoption. Samples of instructional materials received from all available publisher offerings are currently on display for public review and comment.
